Draw the money map

Marketplaces do not simply accept payment. They may hold, split, release, refund or reconcile funds across buyers, sellers and jurisdictions. Draw every movement, fee, currency conversion and responsible entity before selecting a provider.

Experience integrating PayPal, Payoneer, bank gateways and crypto payment services across platforms shows that provider coverage must be evaluated against the business model, not a feature checklist.

Separate commercial and payment truth

An order can be cancelled while a payment is pending; a service can be delivered while settlement remains incomplete. Model these as related but separate state machines.

Store provider references and signed event history. Make callback processing idempotent, and reconcile independently instead of trusting a browser redirect.

Build operations with the product

Disputes, refunds, exchange differences and payout delays will happen. Give support and finance teams tools to understand them without database access.

A payment architecture is successful when growth does not create financial ambiguity. Clarity for operators is as important as convenience for customers.
