Matching is more than similarity
A volunteer platform must consider need type, location, urgency, capacity, availability and trust. A technically similar match can still be operationally wrong.
The COVID Help Portal concept used intelligent matching to connect volunteers with people seeking assistance. In any such system, AI should organise possibilities while accountable people retain control of sensitive decisions.
Trust architecture
Collect only information required to coordinate help. Separate public descriptions from private contact data, restrict access and define retention. Verification should match the risk of the assistance being provided.
Explain why a match was suggested and allow coordinators to correct it. Those corrections become valuable signals for improving rules.
Design for pressure
Crisis users may be distressed, time-limited or using basic devices. Forms should be short, status language unambiguous and support visible.
Operational dashboards should highlight unmatched urgent needs, ageing requests and volunteer capacity. Success is resolved need with dignity—not the number of profiles in a system.
